Training Lawyers on European Mechanisms

CEELI offers a range of courses for lawyers handling cases involving violations of rights guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights, including building successful appeals to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg.

The ECtHR is the most important avenue of international review open to citizens seeking redress from final judgments in the 46 member states of the Council of Europe. Such redress is particularly important for citizens of European countries who have not been able to receive adequate relief from their national courts. The CEELI Institute helps to prepare and train lawyers so that they can better pursue these appeals.

Themes addressed in our courses include the handling of cases involving the rights to life and personal liberty, fair trial, privacy, freedom of expression and assembly, and the right not to be subjected to torture. Our faculty includes highly experienced attorneys practicing before the ECtHR, as well as judges and attorneys working at the Court itself.

CEELI also offers expertise on relevant UN mechanisms that can be used by human rights lawyers when defending clients, such as the mechanisms used by the Human Rights Council and the Universal Periodic Review
