Roundtable on Freedom of Information in Central and Eastern Europe
30-31 May 2024 Villa Grébovka, Prague
For civil society activists & journalists from Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia and Croatia
Access to information contributes to holding public institutions accountable and making them more transparent. The general public has the ‘right to know’ about the functioning and activities of public institutions, allowing it to remain informed about their performance and efficiency. Effective and appropriate freedom of information frameworks contribute to fostering public trust in the government sector and play a critical role in combatting corruption. Access to information is thus key to protecting the rule of law and democratic systems.
This roundtable is a part of the collaboration between the CEELI Institute and civil society in Central and Eastern Europe to combat corruption in the public sector, and in particular in the healthcare sector. The roundtable discussions will focus on how civil society can use access to information as an anti-corruption tool, and provide an overview of the national and international legislative frameworks and standards. Experts will discuss challenges and provide examples of good practices from Central and Eastern European countries and beyond. The discussions will inform the findings of an upcoming report of the CEELI Institute on freedom of information in Central and Eastern Europe, authored by David Banisar.
We only accept applications from civil society actors and journalists from Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia and Croatia. Other applications will be disregarded.
